The Advanced Course in Liaison Psychiatry is moving from Manchester to Exeter
The Advanced Training Course in Liaison Psychiatry was initially set up in 1994, in Manchester, and was run by Francis Creed and Else Guthrie. The course was conceived as a teaching experience, primarily targeted at senior trainees and newly appointed consultants in liaison psychiatry. The original aims were to provide participants with the skills to: assess and manage complex cases, plan and initiate liaison service developments, assess and manage people with severe and enduring medically unexplained symptoms, and develop research skills in liaison psychiatry.
The course has continued to run for the last 22 years and has remained as popular as ever, with usually all of the 30 places filled each year. Many Europeans have attended the course as well people from the UK, and other parts of the world.
The course is now moving to a new home in Exeter as Else Guthrie has left the Manchester Department. The new course will be run by Professor Chris Dickens, (University of Exeter) with support from Professor Peter Aitken who is currently Chair of the Faculty of Liaison Psychiatry (RCPsych). Else Guthrie is still involved in the course and will be teaching on it.
The change has enabled us to revamp the course, keep what was good about the Manchester Course, but also bring in new ideas and new speakers. There will be a greater emphasis on service evaluation and delivery of services in the new course, reflecting the changes in liaison psychiatry in recent times.
The new course will be run in a spacious and modern facility on the University of Exeter campus. Exeter is a lovely, university city with good rail and air links. The dates of the course are 19th – 23rd June 2017. The web link below provides more details about the course and the application process.
