To all my friends and colleagues in EAPM I offer you my warmest greetings. In June of this year we had a terrific meeting in Lausanne – thank you again to Fritz Stiefel and colleagues. Also during this year Isabel Winter our senior administrator and Board have been working hard to develop our organization. Christoph Pieh is our new Treasurer. Natalie Uhlenbusch and Ferenc Koteles are new Board members. Frank Vitinius, Charlotte Rask and Isolde Busch are our new co-opted members. For the full Board listing please look on our website: https://www.eapm.eu.com/eapm/board-and-administration/.
The Board has successfully strengthened our administration and our financial position. We are now focussing on several other important areas: we are improving our communications with a task force led by Natalie Uhlenbusch, developing our relationship with the affiliated national organizations with a task force led by Cedric Lemogne; and are developing our Academy’s educational programme with a committee led by Judith Rosmalen.
I look forward very much to seeing you at our next meeting in September in Munich – put it in your calendar now!

Integrated mental health care could improve treatment of older hospital inpatients with complex health needs
In The Lancet Psychiatry, Michael Sharpe and colleagues report on The HOME study, which investigated the effects and cost-effectiveness of Proactive Integrated Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (PICLP) compared with usual care in patients aged 65 years or older who were admitted to hospital in an emergency. A novel care model that combines proactive consultation liaison interventions with a team-integrated approach, PICLP was aimed at reducing the length of stay—defined as the time spent as an inpatient in the hospital within the 30 days after random allocation— by improving the treatment of older patients, who often present with complex illnesses with physical and psychological comorbidity, which can lead to difficulties in arranging post-discharge care and prolong the 1hospital stay. Participants in the intervention group...READ THE FULL commentary on HOME
Recent activities of the SIG Climate Crisis and Mental Health
The group was founded in 2023 and already initiated a variety of activities at this year’s EAPM meeting in Lausanne, including a workshop on how to address climate-related mental health problems in psychotherapy and a prize for the longest climate-friendly journal to the conference. Recently, we have formed a number of task forces on different topics such as the establishment of a journal club, integrating planetary health into healthcare professional curricula, preparing a manual for organizing sustainable and climate-friendly congresses and a paper based on the findings of our workshop. Moreover, we are again planning activities for the EAPM conference in Munich in September 2025. If you want to hear more about the topic or are interested in joining one of the working groups, we are very happy to welcome additional members and encourage you to get in touch with the group’s chairs Dr. Isolde Busch (isoldemartina.busch@univr.it) and Dr. Natalie Uhlenbusch (n.uhlenbusch@uke.de).
The SIG Young Researchers welcomes two new members
We are happy to announce that two great early career researchers joined our team! From now on, Sinthujan Sivakumar and Dr. med. Sebastian Dietsche are supporting EAPM’s SIG Young Researchers. Sinthujan is a psychologist doing his PhD program in Clinical Science at the University of Zurich, working in a psychocardiology project at the University Hospital Zurich (Department of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine). Sebastian is a specialist in internal medicine and deputy senior physician in psychosomatics at the University Hospital Basel, who specializes in functional physical complaints and conducts research in the field of “Somatic Symptom Disorder”, combining scientific rigor with empathic medicine. The SIG Young Researchers aims to connect early career researchers in the field of psychosomatic medicine, foster academic exchange, increase visibility of innovative research performed by young researchers, and to be a voice of the emerging young scientists. Every year, we organize activities for ECRs at the EAPM conference. If you would like to learn more or join our group, don’t hesitate to email us at EAPM.youngresearchers@uke.de!
Status Report: EAPM Special Interest Group – Children and Adolescents
Chairs: Professor Charlotte Ulrikka Rask, Denmark; Professor Isobel Heyman, UK
The primary goal of the EAPM Special Interest Group (SIG) in Children and Adolescents has been to foster greater engagement in pediatric topics within the EAPM, emphasizing collaboration across multiple disciplines—pediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals. The SIG aims to expand focus on psychosomatics and pediatric consultation-liaison psychiatry, drawing increased attention within EAPM but also from external organizations and associations, as well as at international pediatric forums.
Progress and Initiatives
Increased Symposium Participation: Over recent years, the number of child-focused symposia at EAPM has risen. However, there remains substantial potential to enhance pediatric visibility to attract professionals focused on pediatric care to actively engage in EAPM.
Proposed Joint Initiatives:
Discussions within the SIG have highlighted potential collaborative initiatives, such as joint research proposals, shared symposia at conferences, and the exchange of educational resources and treatment manuals. There is also interest in joint presentations with adult clinicians and researchers to incorporate a developmental perspective.
Concrete Actions
Leadership and Training: In 2024, chair Charlotte Ulrikka Rask became a co-opted board member of EAPM and joined the EAPM Academy to contribute to the development of a structured training program within the context of EAPM.
Communication and Collaboration: A dedicated mailing list for the EAPM SIG – Children has been created to facilitate idea exchange, with a focus on strengthening pediatric and adolescent representation within EAPM. Additionally, participants from the last SIG meeting were invited to join the UK Paediatric Liaison Google group for further collaboration.
The SIG continues to explore avenues to enhance pediatric interest within EAPM and reinforce interdisciplinary collaboration, aiming to build a stronger foundation for pediatric psychosomatics, consultation-liaison psychiatry, and integrated care within the organization.
10. Report on the Romanian Annual Meeting of Psychosomatic Medicine 2024
written by Prof. Dan L. Dumitrascu, EAPMF
The series of annual meetings of psychosomatic medicine of the Romanian Society of Biopsychosocial Medicine continued this year on 18-19 October in the Students’s Culture House Cluj-Napoca. The event was attended by 80+ physicians, psychologists and nurses. A large spectrum of topics was presented and debated, and a distinct moment was the traditional session of master students (where selected students of the master programme on psychosomatic medicine present own data).
There were also three state of art lectures by: Manuela Neuman, Toronto, Canada, on cannabis; Mircea Birt, Cluj-Napoca, on the history of psychosomatic medicine in Romania and Albert Veress, Miercurea Ciuc, on balintianism.
It should be mentioned that the Romanian psychosomsaticians were among the founding members of EAPM and hosted EAPM Annual meeting in 2014, thus, just 10 years ago.
A section of the journal is devoted to topics of particular relevance to EAPM.
As part of the agreement with the Journal of Psychosomatic Research, EAPM has a quota of 48 pages per year for EAPM-related matters, including papers, letters, news, advertisements, publications of C-L activities in various European countries and much more.
EAPM members are invited to submit papers for the EAPM pages to ensure that we make full use of our pages. Instructions for authors can be found below.
EAPM contributions should not exceed 1000 words. Contributions are not meant to publish results of specific disease-related research; topics covered should be of general interest, stem from countries participating in the EAPM or refer to EAPM activities. EAPM contributions are not peer-reviewed but subject to editorial approval. In case of doubt about the suitability of a subject, please contact Prof. Else Guthrie (eapm-pages@eapm.eu.com), Associate Editor for EAPM pages.
The EAPM members’ clinical network list exists to provide a forum for all individual EAPM members to exchange information. Its uses include seeking advice on clinical issues and services and sharing ideas and collaborating on research. It can also be used to share relevant publications and documents. The list is maintained by the EAPM.
Do you have a date for us that you would like to add or share? For example, a meeting in your country? Please do not hesitate and send it to our administration: contact@eapm.eu.com
