Prof Ulrik Malt is chosen for the EAPM Special Recognition Award 2025

Professor Ulrik Fredrik Malt (b.6.2.1946) has long been a leading figure in the world of C-L psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine and integrated care, and played a key role in the foundation of EAPM. He studied Medicine at Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster (Germany) and the University of Oslo (Norway). After residency in psychiatry in Oslo, he was research fellow at the Norwegian Armed Forces Joint Medical Services and thereafter Norwegian Research Council. He served as Head of the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Neuropsychiatry, Rikshospitalet University Hospital, Oslo and as Professor of Psychiatry and Psychosomatic medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo (1988-2016). His main research focus has been psychosomatic disorders and C-L psychiatry, as well as mood disorders and psychopharmacology.

Professor Malt was a member of the steering group of the European Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Workgroup EU-funded study (together with Frits Huyse, Antonio Lobo and Thomas Herzog) that lead to foundation of European Association of Consultation-Liaison psychiatry, the forerunner of EAPM, of which he was one of the founding members.

Professor Malt has also held many international positions including: European representative on the meeting programme committee for Academy of Consultation- Liaison Psychiatry (ACLP); member of the Executive Council of the International College of Psychosomatic Medicine; Advisory Board for the WHO’s Health Report 2001; member of the task force appointed by the European Union to develop European Guidelines on how to prevent negative health effects of depression and related mental disorders; Chairman of the scientific board that evaluated applications for being part of the The German Center for Mental Health (Deutsches Zentrum für Psychische Gesundheit- DZPG), startup 2023-2025, an analogue to NIMH in USA.  He has been member of the editorial board of several journals including General Hospital Psychiatry, Journal of Psychosomatic Research and Journal of Traumatic stress.

Professor Malt is honorary member of the European Association of Psychosomatic Medicine, Scandinavian College of Neuropsychopharmacology and is Distinguished International Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (DIFAPA).
