1. From the EAPM President

Michael Sharpe MD, EAPM President

To all my friends and colleagues in EAPM, I write as we move – albeit slowly – into spring. This year we can look forward to another great year for EAPM. We are preparing for another terrific annual meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, where the meeting President Fritz Stiefel and his wonderful colleagues have created a really great programme.

This year the EAPM Board is focussing on deepening and developing our relationship with our associated national organizations and how EAPM can add value to their work. A task force on this topic will be led by Board member Cedric Lemogne. We will also deepen our dialogue between EAPM national coordinators and the EAPM Board, including a joint dinner and meetings in Lausanne.

I look forward very much to seeing you in the outstandingly beautiful city of Lausanne with mountains and lake. The 2024 meeting promises to be a wonderful occasion with many stimulating talks, opportunities to meet with colleagues old and new, and great social events. Do tell your colleagues…

I wish you the very best from the EAPM Board

Michael Sharpe

President of the European Association of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine and Integrated Care.

The Editor’s Choice

Differentiating between physical and mental fatigue matters in long-Covid

This quarter’s Editor’s Choice looks at fatigue in post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (so called long COVID). Listed as one of the most common symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection, fatigue – a sense of tiredness not improved by sleep or rest – can encompass difficulty in completing physical as well as cognitive tasks. But mental fatigue also includes an emotional dimension and in the context of COVID has been associated with increased risk of depression and anxiety symptoms (1).

Schurr et al. (2) conducted a controlled population-based longitudinal survey exploring physical, mental, and overall fatigue, and its associated factors, in an adult community sample not yet infected with SARSCoV-2 versus a separate sample of those from the same area with a proven SARS-CoV-2 infection. The sample was representative of the local population based on age and sex. The study gathered data on three occasions: May 2020 (T1), November 2020 (T2), and July 2021 (T3). Fatigue was measured using the 10-item Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS)(3), with symptoms of anxiety and depression assessed by the PHQ-4(4). The regression analysis was adjusted for smoking, coronary heart disease, respiratory disease, and previous mental disorders.

The authors summarize their findings in the following passage:

We investigated trajectories of overall, …READ FULL EDITOR’S CHOICE

    3. Interview with Bernd Löwe, Alison Creed Award winner 2024

held in March 2024 by Natalie Uhlenbusch

    Bernd Löwe, MD

    Natalie Uhlenbusch, PhD

Congratulations for winning the Alison Creed Award for your impressive achievements in the field of Psychosomatic Medicine/Consultation Liaison Psychiatry!

Thank you so much! I am delighted to receive this award, which is a great honor and recognition. However, the credit and thanks also go to my many colleagues in our Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf and to many national and international colleagues with whom I have had the great opportunity to do this research together over many years.

You have an impressive career, with a degree in both medicine and psychology, you lived in the USA for a while, you completed training as a psychotherapist in both cognitive behavioral therapy and psychodynamic therapy, and have incredible achievements in research. Would you mind telling us a bit more about your background and professional journey? From your point of view, what are the most important milestones, what has particularly shaped you up to the point where you are now?

That is a big question for a short interview! What drives me most is the curiosity to learn, understand and ultimately develop ways to improve patient care. At first I struggled to decide which of the exciting areas of medicine I wanted to work in…READ THE FULL INTERVIEW
